Google has a major project called Google Books, which has the goal of scanning millions of books from many libraries around the United States and other countries. While many of these books are in the public domain and can be completely viewed and downloaded to your own machine, others are still under copyright and can only be viewed partially.

Google recently announced a way for libraries to link automatically from their catalog to their scans. AUR has just implemented this and when you see the image to the left, you will be able to link into the full text. Here is an example. This will allow you to see parts of a book even when it is checked out or if it is on order and still not received in the library. Please note a few points:

• If you search Google Book Search separately, often you will find a record for the book in Google, when no link is displayed in the AUR catalog record. The system is working correctly in this case. The link will appear only when there is a significant amount of the book that can be viewed. When there is only a snippet view or the full-text is not available at all, no link will appear in the AUR catalog record.
  

• Often, you will not be able to see all of the text, although you still may be able to see quite a bit, and at other times, you will not see the link at all. This is because the ISBN search into Google has failed. For example, the ISBN standard was not issued until the early 1970s, so anything published before that will most probably not be findable through this service. Please note that this does not necessarily mean that the book is not available electronically in some other way. and you can then use the special AUR Extend Search capability, which allows you to search not only Google Books but other projects around the world.

• Also, the Google Book Search function works only with books in the AUR catalog. Obviously, there are millions of books that are not in AUR's catalog, but are available thorugh Google Books or other projects and these must be searched in other ways. See Extending the Search for more information.
